UK ID verification API: National Insurance numbers, DVLA driver numbers and certified checks

The UK has no national ID card. Firms verify identity with a passport or photocard driving licence, electronic checks, or both, under the Money Laundering Regulations 2017. The National Insurance number follows strict letter rules, and the DVLA driver number encodes the holder's surname, date of birth and gender. The deepidv verification API validates both, reads the passport chip and matches the face live.

Response contents of a UK ID verification API

A parse result tells you whether a number is well formed. A verification response tells you whether the person in front of the camera owns it. deepidv runs one session: document capture with OCR and the AI document fraud check, face liveness with a 1:1 match to the document photo, the electronic checks your risk policy requires, PEP and sanctions screening, and an optional 1:N match that flags the same face behind a second account.

  • One decision per session, with an outcome for every step, delivered by webhook (session.status.verified, session.status.rejected, session.status.failed).
  • A reason for every non-pass outcome, separating malformed input, a record that was not found, a mismatch between document and record, and a registry that did not answer.
  • A signed verification receipt with a UTC timestamp per step, anchored on Base L2 with zero personal data on chain, checkable at proof.deepidv.com.

Capturing passports and photocard licences

UK passports carry a chip that deepidv reads by NFC and checks against the issuing signature. Photocard licences are captured in a single shot with the AI document fraud check. Since 6 April 2022, employers and landlords can use certified identity service providers for right to work and right to rent checks on British and Irish passports.

Record checks in the UK

Electronic verification under JMLSG guidance uses credit reference and electoral roll data to confirm name, address and date of birth, with more than one source for higher assurance. deepidv draws on these data sources for each check. Personal data is processed under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Liveness, certified checks and UK rules

The Money Laundering Regulations 2017 require customer due diligence on a risk-based approach, with enhanced due diligence for higher-risk customers. The Online Safety Act requires highly effective age assurance for adult content, which deepidv meets without ID uploads through carrier checks, on-device age estimation and tokenized age proof. Arbiter drafts suspicious activity reports for the NCA for your team's review.

How deepidv runs UK verification

deepidv is a verification engine and agentic compliance suite built from the ground up, without third-party verification APIs underneath. The engine is SOC 2, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS certified, and deepidv is a member of DIACC and the AVPA. Luna, the verification agent, builds and sends United Kingdom verification workflows from the platform or from any LLM through MCP. Arbiter, the compliance agent, maps the workflow to Money Laundering Regulations 2017, JMLSG guidance requirements, monitors accounts after onboarding and drafts suspicious transaction reports for National Crime Agency (UKFIU) for your team to review.
