Gambling Commission Confirms Staged Rollout of Financial Risk Checks
On 7 July 2026 the Gambling Commission confirmed it will introduce financial risk assessments in stages after its pilot found around 97 percent of checks could run frictionlessly on public data.

What Changed
On 7 July 2026, the Gambling Commission confirmed it will introduce financial risk assessments for online gambling through a staged implementation, following its pilot and a post-pilot update issued on 16 April 2026. The pilot found that around 97 percent of assessments could be completed frictionlessly, without customers supplying documents, using only publicly available data, exceeding the White Paper's 80 percent estimate. It also found high-spending customers were between two and four times more likely to hold a debt management plan than the wider population. The assessments build on existing light-touch financial vulnerability checks, which already apply at monthly net-deposit thresholds of £500 and £150. Stage one starts with higher thresholds, tightening as the system matures.
Who It Affects
Licensed remote gambling operators, casino and slots platforms, and sportsbooks serving Great Britain, plus the payments, risk, and compliance teams that manage customer interaction. Data providers feeding credit-reference and affordability signals are drawn in too. By demonstrating that a large majority of checks can be frictionless, the Commission has removed the industry's central objection, so operators can no longer argue that meaningful financial-risk screening must break the customer journey.
What to Do
Prepare for staged thresholds by wiring financial-risk data into onboarding and ongoing monitoring rather than treating it as a manual escalation. Confirm your vulnerability checks already trigger correctly at the £150 and £500 net-deposit points. Design flows so the frictionless majority pass unseen while higher-risk customers receive proportionate intervention. Keep verifiable records of identity, thresholds crossed, and assessment outcomes so you can evidence compliance as each stage takes effect.
